<p>Landscape compares asymmetric and stochastic bacteria (<i>a</i> = .48; var = .00046) with symmetric and stochastic bacteria (<i>a</i> = ½; variance explored over a range of .0046 to .00046). The partitioning variance of asymmetric bacteria was held constant because this value was the estimate obtained from experimental data in <i>E</i>. <i>coli</i>. All reported ratios are for values of asymmetric bacteria divided by values of symmetric bacteria. Contour lines represent the fitness ratio of mean relative fitness determined from simulated populations after values stabilized (see <a href="http://www.ploscompbiol.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pcbi.1004700#pcbi.1004700.g004" target="_blank">Fig 4</a>). Parameter values of <i>λ</i> = .0095 min<sup>-1</sup> and Π = 18.30 min were used for all simulations. The x-axis represents values of the fraction <i>C</i> of anchored damage. The y-axis represents the ratio of the partitioning variance. Region above contour line 1.0 represent <i>C</i> and variance ratio values for which asymmetric bacteria have higher fitness.
