The divergence between the sacrificial ritualism of the brāmhaṇa and the doctrine of ahiṁsā espoused by the kshatriya, seems to have been very old. As eventually Āryavarta came to span the entire Indo-Gangetic plain, from ‘sea to sea’ as Manusmṛti proclaims, a stark contrast emerged between the brāmhaṇa culture of Kuru-Pañcāla and the kshatriya culture of Videha and Magadha. Śatapatha Brāmhaṇa advises the Kuru-Pañcāla brāmhaṇa not to venture into the pracya (eastern) countries as the ārya there have forgotten their dharma of sacrifice enjoined in the sacred texts and have adopted a new dharma against sacrifice. (Chakravarti, 1974 : Jaina Literature in Tamil, 4) By the time of Upaniṣads, the differences crystallised into two distinct schools of thought within the Indo-Gangetic Plain : sacrificial ritualism of Kuru-Pañcāla ārya led by the brāmhaṇa, and the ātmavidyā of pracya ārya led by the kshatriya, which included King Janaka and Yājñavalkya. (Chakravarti, 1974 : 6)
