Exploring altmetrics in an emerging country context AlperinJuan Pablo 2014
This is the abstract submitted (and accepted) for the Altmetrics14 Workshop of the ACM Web Science Conference, to be held in Bloomington Indiana, June 23, 2014.

Objective

The purpose of this study was to do a first exploration of the penetration of altmetrics in the context of an emerging country, namely Brazil. More specifically, it was to determine the viability of altmetrics approaches in such a context, and to eventually determine if the relationships established by previous studies continued to hold true.

iMore broadly, it was also to open a conversation on the generalizability of altmetrics beyond the well-established, high-impact, natural and life science journals.

This work therefore seeks to contribute to the body of literature of the biblio- metrics and altmetrics communities by exploring previously used methodologies and determining the universality of some of the existing claims.
