Sinninghe DamsteA method for the (compound-specific) determination of the stable nitrogen isotopes of nitrogen-containing lipids has been developed. The method is shown to work in bacterial cultures and a microbial mat. This method, together with CSIA of amino acids, is a new tool to trace nitrogen through biosynthetic processes
