Tracing the history of the Japanese immigration to Victoria from 1880 to 1945, this article demonstrates how Asian people were able to migrate under the white Australia policy, settle, open businesses, marry and become part of Australian life. It concentrates on one iconic Australian-Japanese person who was at one time the butler of Dame Nellie Melba.
