Abundance and Diversity of insects obtained through pan traps in both grassland and woodlot habitats

Download (0 kB)

This study was done on September 28th, 2015 at approximately 3:00 pm and the data was collected an hour later at 4:00 pm at approximately 21ᵒC with cloudy skies. The study was conducted at the Saywell woodlot and the grasslands surrounding Stong pond on the Keele campus of York University. Both the woodlot and grassland was wet from the rain a few hours prior to the start and completion of this study.

The study started by placing 9 bowls filled with soap water at the grassland by Stong pond. The starting location was picked at random, and it started by placing a white bowl, then yellow bowl and followed by a blue bowl, in this order until all 9 bowls of soap water is placed. The replicates were placed 3 meters apart, done so by using the transect measuring tape. The same process was done at the Saywell woodlot, starting from randomly picking an edge of the woodlot and placed further into the woods, until all 9 bowls were used, once again in white, yellow, blue pattern. As the bowls are placed within each area, an hour is timed through a watch before obtaining the bowls again for the data. The data collected through each bowl is the abundance (number of total insects (6 legs) found), and RTU, the recognized taxonomic units.
